APM at the Movies: 'Longlegs' Continues a Horror Legacy

23 Jul 2024

Longlegs has all the ingredients for a quality horror movie: an elusive serial killer, clairvoyance, the occult, satanism, and a female FBI agent scrambling to solve the cipher-riddled puzzle before another family meets their dark fate. This creepy tale of mystery and murder is just in time for Halloween 2024 and even has a clever fake website to outline the macabre plot points.

The writer and director Oz Perkins’ name might sound familiar to all the horror fans out there. His father Anthony Perkins portrayed Norman Bates, one of the most iconic horror characters of all time, in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Psycho.

Set in Oregon in 1995, Longlegs captures a similar dark and dreary mood a la The Silence of the Lambs which is also cited as an inspiration for the film. The subtle yet disturbing soundtrack by Zilgi pairs perfectly to set the tone for the story to unfold.

This light and airy track by KPM Music is a stark juxtaposition in mood, yet is fitting for the time-period:

See Longlegs for the scares and stay for the fascinating portrayal of a mad man by Nicolas Cage. Perhaps a prequel is in order?
